Pingree, who represents several islands, including Mount Desert, told the Legislature’s Taxation Committee last week that escalating real estate prices in Maine’s coastal towns are making it tough for local workers and longtime residents to remain in their towns.
Pingree said that proceeds from the tax should be used to augment affordable housing efforts and to help the towns maintain economic diversity in their housing types.
Pingree said her bill has not yet been scheduled for a work session by the Taxation Committee, which is grappling with many different tax proposals hoping to build a comprehensive tax reform package.
