Stories

Although the HGN combines to tell a cohesive story, the book itself is broken down into four parts, which all feature separate writers and artists, as well as telling independently cohesive stories. The following are descriptions of each section, that are taken from the inside cover of the HGN:

  • The Last Voyage of the Infinite Succor: Art by Simon Bisley, Story by Lee Hammock - A distress call brings the Elite Spec Ops Commander to a Covenant supply craft hanging crippled in the outer reach of the Threshold system. As he boards the seemingly abandoned agricultural ship, it becomes clear that the enemy here is not some enterprising human force, but something far more terrifying.
  • Armor Testing: Pencils by W. Andrew Robinson, Colors by Ed Lee, Story by Jay Faerber - A Spartan's life is a dangerous one and a Spartan's armor is the last line of human defense. Testing it, then, becomes an equally dangerous proposition - but for whom? The test subject, or the testers?
  • Breaking Quarantine: Art and story by Tsutomu Nihei - Sergeant Johnson has a problem. Actually, he has thousands of problems, and most of them are flood infection forms. Trapped in the bowels of an ancient alien artifact and surrounded on all sides by a virulent force of nature that needs his flesh, he has a choice: Get out or die trying.
  • Second Sunrise Over New Mombasa: Art by Jean "Moebius" Giraud, Story by Brett Lewis - Before it was reduced to rubble and carnage, New Mombasa was a glittering African jewel, a hub for commerce, transit and politics. And before the Covenant assault finally crushed the metropolis, its citizens, private and public, fought back. This is their story.

Characters and Notes

Last Voyage of the Infinite Succor

  • Main Character: SpecOps Commander Rtas' Vadumee (aka: Half-Jaw)
  • Takes place - Halo: Combat Evolved level, beginning of Chapter 6: 343 Guilty Spark, and later, on board the eponymous ship.
  • Supreme Commander of the Fleet of Particular Justice led by his flagship, Acendant Justice, is the Arbiter from Halo 2
  • It is revealed how Rtas' Vadumee (Half-Jaw) lost part of his jaw, it was sliced off by a close friend that was infected by the flood
  • It shows that other non-sentient life forms could also been infected by The Flood, such as those in the Hunting Preserve on the Infinite Succor.
  • The Legate tells Rtas' Vadumee that The Flood are mentioned in the Religion Text as one of the tests before the Great Journey.
  • It is the first time we see a dual sword wielding elite; we also see an Elite with an equipped shield.
  • It shows that knowledge of an individual can be used by any other Flood, like a collective mind. When Rtas' Vadumee team-mates were infected and assimilated, the Flood could open any door and access any system on the ship right after the team-mates were assimilated. Near the end of the story, Rtas is confronted by a Flood "brain form" entity on the monitor, which bears a resemblance to the Legate that was on board. Whether the Prophet in question was or wasn't consumed by the Flood is unconfirmed.

  • Maria is a Spartan who has retired from active duty and entered the reserves, and has settled down and had a family.
  • This story shows a low Earth orbital skydive.
  • A Spartan with the new MJOLNIR Mark VI Armor can jump into the second floor of a building, from the ground floor.

Breaking Quarantine

  • Main Character: Sergeant Major A.J. Johnson
  • Takes place - Halo: Combat Evolved level, Chapter 6: 343 Guilty Spark
  • It shows how the last bridge to reach the exit of the installation in the game was disabled.
  • It is unclear whether one of six Flood combat forms that Johnson kills was Pvt. Jenkins (if they unlocked or found away around the door that Johnson locked), this would mean the book, Halo: The Flood with Jenkins side story contradicts it. But it also supports why Jenkins could control himself at times through-out the book.

Other Notes

  • Page 122 - The Data Report
    • It implies that Sergeant Major A.J. Johnson might be a Spartan from the Spartan I project and is linked to the ORION Project.
    • Through-out the text they use the NATO Phonetic Alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta) for the first letter of an individuals names, below is some that they use;
      • alpha juliet juliet 20114 = (Sergeant) Avery Johnson Jr
      • charlie hotel 4695 = (Dr.) Catherine Halsey
      • juliet alpha 20101 = (Colonel) James Ackerson
      • ones = Spartan I
      • two = Spartan II
      • Section 0 = ONI Section 0, the internal affairs section as explained in the I Love Bees saga.
    • "Paris/BS Spoof" (Paris = Paris IV and BS = Boren Syndrome) is believed by many people to point out that Spartans might have some or are resistant to the Flood infection, and the condition, Boren Syndrome was just a cover up. This is backed up when Dr. Halsey tries to get medical records related to Sergeant Johnson, Filename: 48789-20114-AJ.txt. At first attempt, the request is unavailable. On the second, “Hunter”; an unknown computer/human user, sends P_BS48789-20114-AJ.txt (The P_BS at the beginning means Paris/Boren Syndrome spoof which was not available on the first request filename). Hunter could have given Halsey the requested file or some kind of bogus "spoof" file, due to the added "P_BS" to hide Johnson's past. Either could be interrupted.
    • The page indicates that Johnson was active as a soldier in NavSpecWar operations in 2502, he was in the Harvest System and at the time doing Operation KALEIDOSCOPE. But according to the date and the events of Halo 2 that would make Johnson at least, 70 years old.
    • If you examine the maps, photos and statistics carefully, you'll see that a sniper took out the driver of a vehicle in motion from over 4 kilometres away.
      • Currently, the longest sniper shot made on a human target is recorded to 2,430 meters (1.5 miles).

Gallery

In the Halo Graphic Novel, there is a section after the stories called "Gallery" which shows off a selection of visions of the Halo universe from Bungie, Marvel and Other Artists, created solely for this book. Below is a full list of who they are and what they drew in the HGN:

Marvel and Other Artists

  • Doug Alexander - Master Chief with a shotgun in hand and UNSC female marine, possibly Spartan-062, Maria, from "Armour Testing" with a flamethrower surrounded by Flood
  • Rick Berry - An unknown Covenant Soldier in a cloudy environment
  • Geoff Darrow - Master Chief standing over one destroyed flood infection form, while behind him a group of a hundred infection forms gather
  • Scott Fischer - Master Chief with a shotgun, with a realistic looking Cortana in front of him
  • Sterling Hundley - The Master Chief wading through a swamp of dead Flood, with a shotgun
  • Craig Mullins - Blood stained Master Chief holding a battle rifle
  • Tsutomu Nihei - A elite infection form roaring
  • George Pratt - Master Chief holding a beam rifle with a few grenades to his feet, getting cover from a destroyed pillar of a building
  • Juan Ramirez - Marines are attacked by a Brute and a grunt
  • Greg Staples - Shooting with the Halo 1 assault rifle, the Master Chief is surrounded from everywhere by the Covenant
  • Justin Sweet - Tatarus sitting on a stone chair, with the Fist of Rukt beside him.
  • John Van Fleet - Master Chief with dual SMG's firing on the flood in a UNSC background
  • Kent Willams - The Master Chief firing SMG’s above and below him into a plant like creature (Possibly Gravemind)
  • Sheik Wang - A prophet holding his head exasperated

Bungie Artists

  • Chris Barrett - A Covenant Elite holding a plasma rifle
  • Frank Capezutto - A plasma grenade passing close by three UNSC Marines
  • Tom Doyle - Master Chief holding a crying child with a dead elite on the floor, staring at the invading fleet above New Mombasa
  • Issac Hannaford - A UNSC Marine meets a roaring Brute
  • Lorraine McLees - Master Chief with a full assortment of every human weapon available with ammunition magazines (including mounted machine guns and a flamethrower), along with a Covenant energy sword with its blade undeployed. In the background there is a Pelican, two different Warthogs (machine gun and gauss cannon), two Longswords and a ODST Helljumper team of eight.
  • Robert McLees - Battle and conversation reports
  • Frank O'Connor - A hand holding a reflective sphere, the picture is Mister Chief in his room. Bungie recently released the picture on bungie.net, Mister Chief
  • Eddie Smith - Master Chief appearing in a the light through a doorway surrounded by rubble
  • Paul Russel He drew a small comic at the end of the book

ODSTs are introduced in the fictional world of the Halo video game and book series. ...

Errors

  • Breaking Quarantine - The infected Marine's transformation into a Flood combat form, shown to be almost instantaneous in the HGN, indicates that the body of the Flood infection form doesn't have to be present for the person to be mutated. This contradicts what is said in other sources about how the chest must be shot in order to destroy the infection form, which resides there. The infection form may inject an egg or serum into the host body, instead of trying to bury itself through the host's chest cavity.
  • Armor Testing - There is an apparent contradiction between Armor Testing and Conversations from the Universe, which states than no Spartan has retired prior to two years before the events of Halo: The Fall of Reach. However, Maria has not retired completely from the military, and instead is simply relegated to the reserves, and the exact date that she chose to “retire” is not specified.
