The team is named after the previous Gulf Coast Raiders, the former Southern States Football League team based in Tampa, Florida that AIFA co-owner Michael Mink owned (and later merged with the Hernando Eagles) and previously used as a replacement team for the Montgomery Maulers in a National Indoor Football League game against Osceola Football soon after purchasing the Maulers.
