Grocery Outlet, first known as Canned Food Grocery Outlet until 1992, is a privately owned supermarket chain. Founded in 1946 in San Francisco, California, it currently operates within the Western states of California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii. The company was in the Texas market for a few years after buying the Yes!Less chain from (now defunct) Fleming, however all Texas stores have now been closed. It is a value-oriented grocery retailer — what the company dubs extreme-value. The company primarily operates stores under the Grocery Outlet name and was in a dispute with Albertsons over the use of the Lucky brand. Supervalu now operates 3 stores under the Lucky brand. Products

Grocery Outlet tends to carry overstocks and closeouts of name brand groceries, as well as private label groceries. Expect to see Holiday Spice Pepsi sold in April, as well as grocery brands unfamiliar to your region. Most Grocery Outlets do not have a serviced meat department, limiting their selection mostly to packaged meats such as bacon, sausage, bologna, etc. however, some do offer fresh meat, ground meat and chicken in packages sealed by the processor. Produce is also sold either by the unit or by the bag, with nothing being sold by the pound.

Controversy

Many people complain that Grocery Outlet frequently sells food items past their expiration dates. Stores typically have signs mentioning that most manufacturers will in fact guarantee the products for more than a month past these rotation dates. This does not apply to perishable items such as meat, dairy, and produce, which is not allowed to be sold past its expiration date.
