Greenwood is a town located in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,458.

Greenwood is located at 32°26'10" North, 93°57'50" West (32.436051, -93.963902)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 20.2 km˛ (7.8 mi˛). 20.2 km˛ (7.8 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,458 people, 964 households, and 701 families residing in the town. The population density is 121.8/km˛ (315.5/mi˛). There are 1,036 housing units at an average density of 51.3/km˛ (133.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 77.01% White, 20.63% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 1.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 964 households out of which 35.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% are non-families. 22.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.00.


In the town the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 28.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $40,408, and the median income for a family is $52,955. Males have a median income of $38,750 versus $26,622 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,374. 13.3% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.3% of those under the age of 18 and 20.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Butler--Greenwood Plantation (399 words)
The beauty of Greenwood lies in the landscape architecture surrounding this historic plantation home, and the side gardens flanking the house remain as one of the few extant examples of antebellum garden design in West Feliciana Parish.
The north side garden is in the form of a geometric parterre, an ornamental garden with paths between the beds, reminiscent of the style developed in French gardens of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Mathews was an important figure in the early judicial history of the state, being one of the presiding judges of the Louisiana Supreme Court in its early phase.

      Greenwood Plantation, one of the Barrow dynasty of homes in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, was originally built in 1830 by William Ruffin Barrow.
In the 1830's, Greenwood, operating as a 3000 acre cotton plantation, provided the Barrow's with a comfortable living.
This was advantagous to the Barrow's as Greenwood grew to 12,000 acres with 750 slaves.
