Greensville County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 11,560. Its county seat is Emporia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 769 km˛ (297 mi˛). 765 km˛ (295 mi˛) of it is land and 4 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,560 people, 3,375 households, and 2,396 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km˛ (39/mi˛). There are 3,765 housing units at an average density of 5/km˛ (13/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 38.94% White, 59.75% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.32% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,375 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.80% are married couples living together, 16.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.00% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.99.


In the county, the population is spread out with 18.20% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 38.70% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 11.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 160.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 177.80 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $32,002, and the median income for a family is $38,810. Males have a median income of $24,919 versus $19,849 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,632. 14.70% of the population and 12.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.00% are under the age of 18 and 18.60% are 65 or older.

Monetary support was provided by the Greensville County Board of Supervisors, for use in that county, and the J. Horsley Soil and Water Conservation District (Greensville and Sussex Counties).
Greensville, Surry, and Sussex Counties have a combined land area of 1065 square miles and are all essentially located within the Coastal Plain physiographic province.
The three counties are located south and east of the Richmond-Petersburg metropolitan area with Surry County being the northernmost and bordering the James River, while the southernmost, Greensville County, borders North Carolina.
