Greenlee County is located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of 2000 its population was 8,547. The county seat is Clifton.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,787 km˛ (1,848 mi˛). 4,784 km˛ (1,847 mi˛) of it is land and 4 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.08% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,547 people, 3,117 households, and 2,266 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km˛ (5/mi˛). There are 3,744 housing units at an average density of 1/km˛ (2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 74.17% White, 0.51% Black or African American, 1.66% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 20.02% from other races, and 3.45% from two or more races. 43.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,117 households out of which 39.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.30% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.26.


In the county the population is spread out with 31.70% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 9.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 109.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 108.00 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $39,384, and the median income for a family is $43,523. Males have a median income of $38,952 versus $23,333 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,814. 9.90% of the population and 8.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.10% of those under the age of 18 and 8.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
