Greene County is a county located in the state of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 147,886. Its county seat is Xenia6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,078 km˛ (416 mi˛). 1,075 km˛ (415 mi˛) of it is land and 3 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.32% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 147,886 people, 55,312 households, and 39,160 families residing in the county. The population density is 138/km˛ (356/mi˛). There are 58,224 housing units at an average density of 54/km˛ (140/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 89.24% White, 6.37% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 2.03% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. 1.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 55,312 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% are married couples living together, 9.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 23.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.00.


In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 13.70% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $48,656, and the median income for a family is $57,954. Males have a median income of $42,338 versus $28,457 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,057. 8.50% of the population and 5.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.70% of those under the age of 18 and 6.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Greene County, Ohio History (22500 words)
Eliza J. Bryant, matron of Greene County Infirmary, Xenia, was born in Bath County, Kentucky, December 25, 1822, and is the daughter of Augusta and Sarah Shoat.
She came to Ohio in 1841, on account of the oppression of slavery, it being the year of the reign f the fl Indians, when the slaveholders were disguising themselves, and killing off the colored women and children.
The former was a native of Ohio, and the latter of Virginia.
