The Greater Montreal Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the Canadian province of Quebec. As of 2006, Statistics Canada identifies Montreal's Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) (land area 4,259 km²) as Canada's second most populous with a population of 3,635,571 [1]. A slightly smaller area of 3,838 km² is governed by the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) (English: "Montreal Metropolitan Community", a translation rarely used). This level of government is headed by a president (currently City of Montreal mayor Gérald Tremblay). The CMM has a land area and an estimated population of 3,493,485[citation needed]. The Greater Montreal Area is a term used to describe either the Montreal, Quebec, Canada Census Metropolitan Area or the Montreal Metropolitan Community (French: Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal).
The CMA is defined by Statistics Canada while the Montreal Metropolitan Community is a level of government in Quebec, and is led by a president, who is currently Gérald Tremblay, mayor of Montreal.
According to Statistics Canada, the 2004 population of the Montreal CMA was 3,707,842 people (Statistics Canada) and its area was 4,047 sq km.

Montreal is situated in the southwestern corner of the province of Quebec, approximately 270 kilometres (168 miles) southwest of Quebec City, the provincial capital, and 190 kilometres (118 mi) east of Ottawa, the federal capital, and 539 kilometres (335 mi) northeast of Toronto.
Montreal was merged with the 27 surrounding municipalities on the Island of Montreal on 1 January 2002.
Montreal lies at the confluence of several climactic regions and thus the climate in Montreal varies greatly, both by season and by day to day, and is considered a part of the culture of the city by Montrealers.
