Early graphics chips were simple video adapters for generating text and computer graphics on a video computer display found in early computers and graphics cards. It was sometimes connected to a simple radio frequency adapter for interfacing with a common television recievever.

The more advanced graphics chips available today, capable of independent computation and graphics processing are nowadays generally called graphics processing units, in analogy with central processing units.

As those who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Revolution may know, technology giant ATI is currently hard at work developing the graphics chip that will power the new machine - and now they've gone on record to tell us a little bit more about it.
In a recent interview with RevolutionReport.com, ATI's John Swiminer confirmed that the Revolution chip, currently titled Hollywood, will not be based on current or forthcoming PC architecture - but he didn't say whether it is instead based on Flipper, the chip used in the GameCube.
Even when the Flipper chips came out, people were asking that question: "Is this a spin-off of something done on the PC?", and the answer is no," Swiminer stated.

In computer graphics there are two types of graphics: Raster, where each pixel is separately defined, and Vector, where mathematical formula are used to draw lines (eg 'take two points and draw a parabole between them'), which are then interpreted at the 'receiving end' to produce the graphic.
In computing, graphics are used as an interface for the user; and graphics is one of the five key elements of multimedia technology.
Graphics are heavily used in education in textbooks for subjects such as geography, science and math to illustrate theories and concepts.
