The area of Florida diminished with the establishment of British colonies to the north and French colonies to the west.
Florida seceded from the Union on January 10, 1861 and was one of the founding members of the Confederate States of America (CSA, also known as the Confederacy).
Florida consists of the Panhandle extending along the northern Gulf of Mexico and the large Peninsula with the Atlantic Ocean as its eastern border and the Gulf of Mexico as its western border.

The Florida deal was just one between state governments and cigarette makers calling for $246 billion in payments over 25 years to compensate taxpayers for medical spending on smokers with lung cancer, heart disease and other illnesses.
She said she doubted that the governor's plan would encourage diversity or that state lawmakers would approve the $20 million to $30 million in financial aid that would be needed to boost needy minority students' ability to go to college.
Florida's accelerated appeals system still faces a court challenge, and it is already inviting comparisons to the one in Texas, the state where Bush's brother is governor and where more inmates are executed than in any other state.
