Google.org is the charitable arm of search engine Internet company Google. It lists its goals as helping with global poverty, energy and the environment. It is a for-profit charity, which means it pays taxes. The idea of a for-profit charity may seem to be a oxymoron, but Google feels that this will be beneficial in that the organisation can start companies, lobby Congress, hire consultants and a number of other activities that normal charities cannot do. The organisation has made 7 millions dollars in investments and grants as of September 15, 2006[1]. Google has given the organisation a starting fund of 1 billion dollars. Its first project is an attempt to create a new hybrid car, with gas mileage of 100 mpg.
