The Golden Toad or Monte Verde Toad (Bufo periglenes) lived in handfulls of places in the Monteverde forest located in Costa Rica, a country in Central America. It is classified by the IUCN as extinct. Since 1989, not a single specimen has been seen. This species which had been discovered in the 1960s has only ever been seen in a small region of high-altitude cloud forest only about 10 square km in area. While the cause of its extinction is unknown, it was probably due to a number of reasons (pollution, weather, etc).
