This gold key has had the logo removed to protect the owner from identification

Gold Keys are made available to large top clients of Swiss Banks. The concept of the "Gold Key customer" is one which is only known in Swiss banking. The arrival of a Gold Key client always requires an extra flurry of attention. Each Gold Key is bearer and linked to a completely anonymous account. Every key is electronically paired with a ten digit account number that functions as a password. Without that number the key is worthless. Clients select their account number via a secure terminal, meaning account numbers are known only to the client and computer. This is one way the bank ensures anonymity, and the safety of the bank employees. The banker will have no idea what the owner is storing in the bank. Many clients emboss corporate logos or initials on to their keys, but these mean nothing to the bank. Retrieving an account number

Clients must not lose their account number, for there will be no way of retrieving it if forgotten. For this reason, many customers will write down their number and keep it in a secret place. The logo or initials on the key often provide the owner with an secret clue as to how to retrieve the number. As an added level of security, the customers only get one try at entering the account number. A wrong try shuts down the bank's computer. "Caution! Before you strike the enter key, please check the accuracy of your account number. If the computer does not recognise your account number, this system will automatically shut down."

In the famous book, The Da Vinci Code, the heroine, Sophie Neveu is given a gold key by her grandfather, Jacques Saunière, shortly before his murder. The gold key bears the logo of the Priory of Sion, a secret and mysterious society which leads the heroes, Sophie Neveu and Robert Langdon, to guess that the account mumber code corresponds to a scrambled 10 digit Fibonacci code, (13-3-2-21-1-1-8-5), that they found at the murder scene. She re-arranges the code into the correct fibronacci sequence (1-1-2-3-5-8-13-21), and presto, she can access the account. She is welcomed by the Swiss Banker, André Vernet, when he realises that by knowing the correct code she must be the rightful owner of the account. For the movie, see The Da Vinci Code (film). ... A stricking difference between Gold Key and other publishers (which had been done by Dell as well) was to publish most of their mystery, jungle, science-fiction, adventure and the like series with full color painted covers rather then the standard line-artwork.
In this period Gold Key experimented with digests, to some success, and distributing comic books simultaneously both to newstands under the Gold Key label and — usually in plastic bags of three — in toy and department stores under the Whitman logo which it also used for such products as coloring books.
Three of Gold Key's original characters — Magnus, Robot Fighter, Doctor Solar and Turok, Son of Stone — were used in the 1990s to launch Valiant Comics' "Valiant Universe".
