Girardville is a borough located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 1,742. It was founded in 1832 and is named after Stephen Girard of Philadelphia who purchased large land holdings in and around the town. It was incorporated as a borough in 1872. The mining of anthracite coal was the mainstay of the community for many years and during the early decades of the twentieth century it had a population of nearly 5,000 residents.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,742 people, 767 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,293.4/km▓ (3,327.4/mi▓). There are 886 housing units at an average density of 657.9/km▓ (1,692.4/mi▓). The racial makeup of the borough is 99.43% White, 0.00% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. 0.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 767 households out of which 23.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.5% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% are non-families. 34.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the borough the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.8% who are 65 years of age or older.
