Reyes has had a long musical career, playing in bands and writing songs since her freshman year in high school. Her first band was The Israelites, a Christian traditional ska band from La Crescenta, California. She was a member of California (Band), and all girl pop-punk band the Halo Friendlies, assuming the role of bassist after the departure of Cheryl Hecht. On April 6, 2007 rock rumor website Buddyhead reported that Ginger Reyes was the new bass guitarist for The Smashing Pumpkins,[3] replacing former bassists D'arcy Wretzky and Melissa Auf der Maur, in the new line-up. It was confirmed she was a member of the band when they played their first show on May 22, 2007 at Le Grand Rex in Paris, France[4] and following London and American tour dates.
