General Vanier was built in 1962 to house students from the overcrowded CCVS and Saint Lawrence High Schools. It was a grades 9-13 high school until 2002 when grades 11-12 were sent to CCVS to make way for grades 7 and 8. The school was thereafter known as an Intermediate School.


The aproximately 700 students at General Vanier come form a wide array of ethinic and socio-economic backgrounds. Apoximately half of the school is white with the other half being either native mohawk students from nearby Akwesasne or from the growing immigrant community.
