New York City Subway nomenclature: Information from Answers.com (3802 words)
Despite its efforts toward single identifiers for each service, the MTA has adopted a variation of a signage practice that began with street railways, in which a variant service is identified with a special color or symbol on the route number signs.
Services on these lines usually had the same name as the branch line they ran on; for example, the line that the current F service runs on in Brooklyn was (and is) the Culver Line, and the BMT signed these trains Culver Local or Culver Express.
The IRT was the contractor with the City of New York to operate the first subway lines; by that time it was already leasing all the elevated railways in Manhattan.
