Freightliner, LLC is a truck tractor manufacturer. The company is owned by DaimlerChrysler. In the 1950's, Consolidated Freightways decided to produce their own truck line after finding that most existing heavy trucks did not have sufficient power to climb the steep grades found in the mountain regions of the western United States. The truck line eventually became known as Freightliner.


Freightliner's current main brands in the class 8 are the Columbia, the Century S/T, the Coronado and Classic, and Classic XL. Their current class 6/7 truck is the M2. Freightliner also produces the popular Sprinter delivery van and the Unimog utility vehicle. Freightliner trucks, in particular the Classics, are well known for having a much longer wheelbase and correspondingly larger turning radius than other cargo-hauling trucks, often creating issues regarding tight corners (such as street corners with a pole near the road that the trailer can hit) or difficulty backing in to tight spots (as semi-trucks require a large space for movement, and the longer wheelbases increase this need). The company is known mainly for the heavy duty class 8 diesel trucks that it produces, as well as class 5-7 trucks.
As of 2005 Freightliner is the largest manufacturer of heavy duty trucks in North America with annual earnings of over $17 billion (2005 est.) and over 22,000 employees (including Detroit Diesel).
Today, that truck is in the Smithsonian collection in Washington, D.C. Lacking distribution capability, and seeking higher volume to reduce production costs, CF entered into an agreement to sell their trucks through the White Motor Company, of Cleveland, OH, and their dealer network in the U.S. and Canada.
