The Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (usually translated from German as Freiberg University of Mining and Technology or Freiberg Mining Academy, University of Technology and abbreviated TUBAF) is a small German University of Technology with about 4000 students in the city of Freiberg, Saxony. It was established in 1765, by Prince Franz Xaver, regent of Saxony, based on plans by Friedrich Wilhelm von Oppel, Carl Wilhelm Benno von Heynitz and Friedrich Anton von Heynitz, and is the oldest university of mining and metallurgy in the world. The sciences of mining engineering and metallurgy had been privately taught for several centuries in Saxony´s silver mining area when the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology (TU Bergakademie Freiberg) was founded by a decree of Prince Regent Xaver in 1765.
Freiberg University is thus one of the world’s oldest technical universities, and the first one specialized in mining and technology.
Freiberg is located quite close to the "Erzgebirge" (ore mountains) which is not only famous for its ores which were mined in former times but also for their arts in wood-carving especially in Christmas tools.
