The principal for the 2007-2008 school year is newly appointed Mr. Michael LaPorta. Asst. principal for grades 10 and 12 is Mark Caccavo, while the vice principal replacing Jake Llewellyn has yet to be announced. The main hall monitor/crossing guard is Pierre Morgans.

Freedom's Scholastic Scrimmage team has turned in several first and second place finishes in the Lehigh Valley region. The Freedom Patriot Band

Ronald H. Demkee was the original director of instrumental music at Freedom and conductor of the Patriot Band and Orchestra from 1967 until his retirement in 1997. The first year band had a membership of 90. In 1970, band members made their first major national appearance (3 years after the school opened) as they marched down the streets of Miami, Florida in the Orange Bowl parade, in front of a national television audience. Under the leadership of current band director Michael Moran, the Freedom Patriot Band has performed at the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida. In 2004, the Freedom High School Patriot Marching Band performed at the Boscov's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia. The Patriots turn in several all district band members each year (from Freedom High). The Band is currently preparing for its 2008 trip where it will participate in St. Patrick's Day festivities in Ireland. BASD Planetarium

Freedom is home to Bethlehem Area School District's only planetarium. It is operated by science teacher, Bill Safranek who opened the planetarium to elementary schools and other small groups in the area in order to save it from demolition. The school offers basic astronomy classes as well as an after-school club to its students.


Construction

Like many Lehigh Valley schools, Freedom is undergoing construction to accommodate aging infrastructure and a growing student population. The new main entrance was completed in June of 2006 and Freedom's athletic facilities opened in December. The additions boast new main offices, classrooms, a business wing, a refurbished pool & old gymnasium, a fitness center, a new athletic office, a new trainer's room, and a state-of-the-art gym. The academic wings of the school still remain in the 1960s with no current plans for remodeling. Construction is underway on integrating the school's two cafeterias.


Rubik's Cube Club

There is a Rubik's Cube Club pending approval at Freedom for the 2007-2008 school year. Currently, the club will have three co-presidents, consisting of Ajay Koti, Yiran Lin, and Truc Nguyen. The club will be established to promote knowledge of the Rubik's Cube, and will also be there to assist individuals who would like to learn how to solve the puzzle. The club is open to any students and/or faculty who are interested.


FHS Theatre Company

Freedom High School is well known for its high quality theatre company. The company produces two plays per year and participates in a local awards show called the Freddy Awards. Their most recent production was Anything Goes. It starred Amanda Kostalis as Reno Sweeney, John Andreadis as Billy Cocker, Alex Shuck as Moonface Martin, Christine Stehly as Bonnie, Drew Stonesifer as Evelyn Oakleigh and Rebecca Righi as Hope Harcourt. Savannah Turpentine, Zachary Gibson, Tony Marinho, and Eric Conte also participated. Lighting was done by Ryan Hay and the set was designed by Megan Truscott and Rafael Salazar.



Freedom has always been admired for their perserverence and passion in the shows they produce. The company started to form under the guidance of Mrs. Kim Harper and has grown exponentially under the direction of Ms. Jennifer Wescoe. Since the Freddys began in 2002, Freedom has been nominated foBest Musical and performed at the cermony that night 4 out of the 5 years. The performances include: Dance at the Gym(West Side Story), Crapshooters Ballet(Guys and Dolls)(This number recieved the first standing ovation after a group number), I Got Rhythm(Crazy For You), and Anything Goes(Anything Goes). Both Crazy For You and Anything Goes received 14 Freddy nominations. Crazy For You still holds the honor of receiving 8 Freddys, the most received to date in Freddy history. These included: Best Overall Musical, Best Choreography, Best Costumes, Best Featured Dancer (Andy Truscott), Best Actor (Andy Truscott), Best Chorus, and Best Scenic Design.

Shakespeare Society

There is currently a Shakespeare Society waiting for approval for the 2007-2008 school year. The advisor will be Mrs. Sacarakis, and the President will be Ajay Koti. In the club, members will be given the opportunity to learn Shakespeare's plays in new and creative ways. They will read the plays, perform them, and write their own versions. All that are interested are welcome to join. The club hopes to make Shakespeare more interesting and accessible to the average high school student.
