Encyclopedia > Forbes Global 2000

The Forbes Global 2000 - is an annual ranking of the top 2000 corporations in the world by Forbes magazine. The ranking is based on a mix of four metrics: Sales, Profit, Assets and Market Value. The list is published since 2003. A corporation (usually known in the United Kingdom and Ireland as a company) is a legal entity (distinct from a natural person) that often has similar rights in law to those of a Civil law systems may refer to corporations as moral persons; they may also go by the name... In business and accounting an asset is anything owned which can produce future economic benefit, whether in possession or by right to take possession, by a person or a group acting together, e. ... Market price is an economic concept with commonplace familiarity; it is the price that a good or service is offered at, or will fetch, in the marketplace; it is of interest mainly in the study of microeconomics. ...

The Forbes Global 2000 is a useful indicator of which are the leading companies in the world, but it is only an interpretation. The results are not definitive; any change to the criteria would produce a different list.

Exclusions and inconsistencies

As the list is published early in the calendar year, Forbes has to use out of date information for the many non U.S companies which have year ends early in the calendar year, including Japanese companies, which all have 31 March year ends. No adjustments are made to reflect different accounting practices in different countries, which leads to some major anomalies. For example Vodafone is ranked 377 in the 2005 list due to losses created by huge writedowns of purchased goodwill, but if amortisation of purchased goodwill were not charged against statutory profits in the UK, it would be in the top 20. It should also be noted that wholly state-owned corporations are excluded because no market valuation exists and in some cases accounts are not publicly available either. Some of these state companies would rank highly if they were eligible, for example the national oil companies of some of the OPEC countries. March 31 is the 90th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar (91st in leap years), with 275 days remaining. ... Vodafone Group Plc is a mobile network operator headquartered in Newbury, Berkshire, England, UK. It is the largest mobile telecommunications network company in the world by turnover and has a market value of about £84. ... Look up Goodwill in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. ... Amortization is distribution of a single lump-sum cash flow into many smaller cash flow installments for easier repayment. ... OPEC Logo The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is an international cartel[1][2] made up of Iraq, Indonesia, Iran, Kuwait, Libya, Angola, Algeria, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. ...
