Ferbane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (195 words)
Ferbane (Féar Bán in Irish, meaning "white grass") is a small town on the north bank of the River Brosna in County Offaly, Ireland, between Birr and Athlone.
Ireland's first milled-peat fired power station was commissioned by the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) at Ferbane in 1957.
Since the station's closure in 2001, the Shannon Development agency and the ESB have invested €1.4 million in the development of a new Business and Technology Park which opened in 2005.
Seanad Debates Official Report - 14-10-98 (3759 words)
On 24 September a bombshell was dropped in County Offaly when ESB management arrived to announce their intention to recommend to the board of the ESB that the £16 million refurbishment programme in Ferbane should not proceed and, as a result, the station would close next year.
This refurbishment programme was in a way a result of an initiative taken a few years ago by the ESB workers in Ferbane along with their colleagues in Bord na Móna to prolong peat generation at the station well into the next century.
Ferbane and its surrounding areas, all of those who work in the power station and all who depend on it, must be determined that there will be no faltering at the final hurdle which remains to be surmounted.
