Fayette County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 21,802. Its county seat is Vandalia, Illinois6.

The racial makeup of the county is 94.02% White, 4.88% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
