Exira is a city located in Audubon County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 810.


Geography

Exira is located at 41°35'30" North, 94°52'42" West (41.591617, -94.878247)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.6 km˛ (1.0 mi˛). 2.6 km˛ (1.0 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 810 people, 362 households, and 211 families residing in the city. The population density is 306.6/km˛ (791.0/mi˛). There are 394 housing units at an average density of 149.1/km˛ (384.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 98.64% White, 0.25% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 362 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.7% are non-families. 38.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 27.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.08 and the average family size is 2.74.


In the city the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 19.0% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 33.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 49 years. For every 100 females there are 73.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 69.7 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $26,319, and the median income for a family is $32,222. Males have a median income of $25,917 versus $17,656 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,124. 11.7% of the population and 9.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.0% of those under the age of 18 and 13.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A $150,000 gift from the estate of UI graduate Velma P. Bredahl of Exira, Iowa, will be used by researchers at the University of Iowa to study one of the most common causes of inherited mental retardation.
The estate gift to the University of Iowa Foundation created the Julius and Velma Bredahl Research Fund at the University of Iowa Foundation and will be used by staff members at the University Hospital School (UHS) to study the relationship between Fragile X Syndrome, a common genetic disorder, and severe behavior disorders.
The University of Iowa Foundation, the preferred channel of support to all areas of the university, works closely with alumni and friends to establish and maintain private resources that can be used for medical research, student financial aid, faculty development, and equipment and facilities projects in departments and programs across campus.
