Encyclopedia > Eric Wedge

Eric Michael Wedge (born January 27, 1968, in Fort Wayne, Indiana) is the current manager of the Cleveland Indians in Major League Baseball; he is the youngest current manager in the majors. He played college baseball at Wichita State University and was a catcher, making it to the majors for only sporadic play from 1991 to 1994, primarily as a designated hitter with the Boston Red Sox. He managed the AAA Buffalo Bisons before becoming the Indians' manager at the start of the 2003 season, replacing interim manager Joel Skinner. During the early part of the 2005 baseball season, Wedge sported a mustache which sparked controversy amongst fans, and arguably led to a sub-par start for the Indians. He later shaved the mustache and the team returned to contention.
