Some persons attempt to pronounce Ennis like "Enos"; the proper pronunciation is that it rhymes with "tennis," at least for the local residents. However, the word Ennis derives from its former counter part Ennis in Ireland, which is pronunced "Inis" as the Irish have it, therefore both ways are technically correct.

The racial makeup of the city was 66.57% White, 14.71% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 15.93% from other races, and 2.03% from two or more races. Ennis has an annual Bluebonnet festival during the month of April.


Ennis is the only incorporated city in the United States that still elects its City Marshal. The election is held every two years with the winner being named Chief of Police by the City Council and City Manager. Currently the post is held by no one

Ennis is on the Southern Pacific Railroad and at the intersection of Interstate Highway 45, State highways 34, 75, and 287, and Farm roads 85, 879, 1183, 1722, and 3413, fourteen miles southeast of Waxahachie in southeastern Ellis County.
Ennis remained a predominantly agricultural community, as demonstrated in the chamber of commerce's slogan, "Where Railroads and Cotton Fields Meet." In 1934 the Texas and New Orleans Railroad acquired both the Texas Midland and the Houston and Texas Central.
Two popular annual events are held in Ennis, the Bluebonnet Trails, begun in the 1930s and held in late April and early May when the bluebonnets are in bloom, and the Ennis Polka Festival, founded in 1967 and held every May, which brings thousands of visitors to the community to celebrate its Czech heritage.
