XI. English Traits. Aristocracy. Emerson, Ralph Waldo. 1909-14. Essays and English Traits. The Harvard Classics (4899 words)
Of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, the Emperor told Henry V. that no Christian king had such another knight for wisdom, nurture, and manhood, and caused him to be named, “Father of curtesie.” “Our success in France,” says the historian, “lived and died with him.” 1
The war-lord earned his honors, and no donation of land was large, as long as it brought the duty of protecting it, hour by hour, against a terrible enemy.
In the same line of Warwick, the successor next but one to Beauchamp, was the stout earl of Henry VI.
Anita Loos (1253 words)
Beauchamp provides an appropriate context for Loos' professional life, generally in the form of more or less short remarks before and after sections of Loos' work.
According to Beauchamp, "he failed to see how the laughs could be translated to the screen," especially since he "believed audiences didn't come to the movies to read" - and much of Loos' humor occurred in the title cards (41).
Beauchamp, though, tells us that "she had little tolerance" for the participants at the Table nor for Mary Pickford "because she thought they believed their own press clippings" (3).
