Many residents and locals believe that much of the city's character was lost with the introduction of two strip malls, a Wal-Mart, and a Home Depot on the road to Bar Harbor, and as well there is currently a heavy emphasis on drug rehabilitation services. City planners are currently attempting to improve Ellsworth's image through a number of ventures, including a new park to be constructed along the Union River, offering grants to help businesses improve their façades, widening the busy High Street, and a major traffic rerouting in the congested area known as "the Triangle."
