Ellery Hanley is a Rugby League player and coach. Born in Leeds in 1961, Hanley started his career in 1981 with Bradford before his transfer to Wigan in 1985 for a then world-record £85,000. He became a regular member and also captain of the Great Britain side, and the inspiration behind Wigan's domination of the sport in the late 1980s. He joined Leeds in 1991 and had two spells with Australian club Balmain, leading them to the Grand Final in 1988, and one year with Western Suburbs. He also coached Great Britain, becoming the first black person to coach or manage a major national team in Great Britain. He later coached St Helens .
