Eji(恵慈,year-of-birth unknown - March 31,623?) was a monk who came across the sea from Kokuryo to Japan at the Asuka period 595. He became a Buddhism teacher of Shōtoku Taishi.
He propagated Buddhism in Japan. When Hōryū-ji was completed in 596, he lived with priest Esō who came from Kudara, and they were called "Sanpō no Tōryō" (三宝の棟梁). In 615, He went back to native country with a annotation of Buddhism sacred book which Shōtoku Taishi wrote. Horyu-ji. ... He heard that Shōtoku Taishi died on February 22th, 622. He grieved very much and took an oath of meeting Shōtoku Taishi again in Jōdo on the same day of 623, the following day. He achieved an oath.
