The …cole Pratique des Hautes …tudes is a university in Paris, France. It is part of the University of Paris.


The EPHE was created on July 31, 1868, by a decree of Victor Duruy, French Minister of Public Education, and is presently, "a grand institution of higher learning" according to the French Ministry of Education.


The lessons are given there by high level researchers. The courses or seminars are accessible to all. EPHE delivers proper diplomas, as well as national diplomas of third cycle (DEA and doctorate).


The school is divided into three sections:

  1. Life and earth sciences
  2. Historical and philological sciences (also known as "fourth section");
  3. Religious sciences (founded in 1886).

The influence of Edmond de Pressensé, a pastor and large-minded theologian, and of Madame de Pressensé, a woman of superior intellect and refined feeling, who devoted her life to educational works and charity, made a great impression on him.
They showed their gratitude by dedicating a book to him in 1896, Etudes d'histoire du moyen √Ęge, and after his retirement in 1905 by having his features engraved on a slab (see A Gabriel Monod, en souvenir de son enseignement: √©cole pratique des hautes √©tudes, 1868-1905, √©cole normale sup√©rieure, 1880-1904.
Gabriel Monod died in 1912 in Versailles and is buried there in the Cimetière des Gonards.
