It is bounded on the northwest by Kamrup district of Assam, on the northeast by Ri Bhoi district, on the east by EastKhasiHillsdistrict, on the south by Bangladesh, on the west by East Garo and South Garo Hillsdistricts.
It is also the district headquarter of EastKhasiHillsDistrict and is situated at an altitude of 4,908ft (1,496 m) above sea level.
