The castle was originally home to the Fletcher Clan who moved to the site c.1745 carrying with them the door of their previous home at Achallader. In 1864 the original mansion-style house (to the left in the picture) was elaborated into its present dramatic Franco-baronial form by the architect Andrew Kerr. Dunans was bought in 1999 by Robert & Ewa Lucas-Gardiner, Lord and Lady of the manor of Marr. The couple ran the house as a Country Hotel until fire severely damaged the first and second floors and the attic of the castle in January 2001. Subsequently, it remained un-occupied and was left to fall into ruin until purchased in 2003, by Charles and Sadie Dixon-Spain. The current owners have begun a restoration project of the castle and grounds, known as the Dunans Heritage Project. The restored castle will be used as a home for the Dixon-Spains and as a tourism, community, arts and business venue. In mid-2006 the grounds will be opened to the public.


Dunans Bridge is an A-listed structure, designed by Thomas Telford and constructed to comemorate the battle of Waterloo. The three-arched rubble construction is considered internationally important as it is the only extant bridge of this type. It stands over 15 metres from the river bed. Associated with the site, but still in the ownership of the Fletchers is the Fletcher Mausoleum, a grade C listed structure.
