Encyclopedia > Drop d

Drop D tuning (or simply drop-D) is a guitar tuning style in which the lowest (sixth) string is tuned ("dropped") to D rather than E as in standard tuning. It may thus be represented, lowest string to highest, as DADGBE. As a result of this change, the bottom three strings form a D power chord, which can be shifted up or down the fretboard with a single finger to produce any power chord quickly and easily. Drop-D also enables the guitarist to play a whole tone lower than in standard tuning, and many artists value this deeper, fuller sound. Indeed, it is not uncommon for modern rock and metal guitarists to play in "drop Db" or "drop C," lowering the sixth string a whole tone and then lowering every string one or two semitones. Often this technique requires specially-made guitar strings. The classical guitar typically has 3 nylon and 3 nickel-wound strings. ... This page is about the musical process of tuning, for musical systems of tuning see musical tuning. ... In music, a power chord is an interval which serves the diatonic function of a major or minor chord. ... The fingerboard, also known as a fretboard, is a part of most stringed instruments. ... The musical interval of a major second — also called a whole-tone — is the relationship between the first note (the root or tonic) and the second note in a major scale (and also a minor scale). ... Rock and roll (also spelled Rock n Roll, especially in its first decade), also called rock, is a form of popular music, usually featuring vocals (often with vocal harmony), electric guitars and a strong back beat; other instruments, such as the saxophone, are common in some styles. ... Heavy metal is a form of music characterized by aggressive, driving rhythms and highly amplified distorted guitars, generally with grandiose lyrics and virtuosic instrumentation. ...

Chords in drop-D tuning are formed as they are in standard tuning, with the exception of the sixth string, which is either omitted or fretted two semitones higher. In music and music theory a chord (from the middle English cord, short for accord) is three or more notes sounding simultaneously, or near simultaneously over a period of time. ...
