Initially, in February of 1940, the oblast was administratively subdivided into 30 raions. In December of the same year Boryslavskyi Raion was liquidated and two raions were reorganized. After the oblast was retaken from German occupants in the course of World War II, in March of 1945, Birchanskyi, Liskivskyi, and a part of Peremyshlskyi Raion (including Peremyshl city) were transferred to Poland. In 1948, Medykivskyi Raion was transferred to Poland. In 1951, Nyzhnie-Ustrytskyi Raion was given to Poland. In 1957 and 1959, four raions of the oblast were liquidated.
