The award was first given in 1957. It is co-sponsored by the Vermont State PTA and the Vermont Department of Libraries. Each spring, a committee of eight adult judges carefully selects 30 books to comprise the shortlist for the award. Vermont schoolchildren who have read at least 5 books from the list then vote for their favorite titles the following spring.
