Doraville is a city located in DeKalb County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,862.


Geography

Doraville is located at 33°54'19" North, 84°16'26" West (33.905302, -84.273870)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.3 km˛ (3.6 mi˛). 9.3 km˛ (3.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,862 people, 2,998 households, and 1,981 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,060.7/km˛ (2,747.0/mi˛). There are 3,102 housing units at an average density of 333.6/km˛ (864.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 46.35% White, 14.77% African American, 1.28% Native American, 12.67% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 20.62% from other races, and 4.14% from two or more races. 43.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,998 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% are married couples living together, 13.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% are non-families. 21.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.24 and the average family size is 3.62.


In the city the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 14.9% from 18 to 24, 38.7% from 25 to 44, 16.4% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 127.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 134.3 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $40,641, and the median income for a family is $41,903. Males have a median income of $23,681 versus $22,165 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,048. 15.3% of the population and 9.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.8% of those under the age of 18 and 9.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Doraville is the result of this movement of early settlers into the area from the Carolinas, Virginia and other parts of Georgia.
Doraville Native John Creel recalled a story that, in the early days, a guard had to be posted at the cemeteries at night after church members learned that medical students were digging up bodies to dissect in their studies.
While the Doraville area was spared the worst of the destruction of the fighting, the effects of the war were visible to the population.

The Doraville Library is an affiliate branch of the DeKalb County Public Library.
The City of Doraville pays staff salaries and maintains the building and grounds, while books and other library materials and services are provided by the DeKalb County Public Library.
In 1970 the City of Doraville built the current building and the name was changed to the Doraville Library.
