Encyclopedia > Doorways in the Sand

Doorways in the Sand is a Novel by author Roger Zelazny Roger Joseph Zelazny (May 13, 1937 - June 14, 1995) was a United States writer of fantasy and science fiction short stories and novels. ...

Plot

Fred Cassidy, perpetual student and expert building climber, finds himself hunted by gangs of criminals and government agents. He discovers that a priceless jewel, on loan to the earth from an extra-terrestrial civilisation, has gone missing and he may be the last person to have seen it. He decides to do his own investigating with help from friends and some strange, rogue galactic policemen.

Style

The novel is unusual in that each chapter starts with a paragraph totally unrelated to the previous chapter, and then the rest of the chapter brings that first paragraph back into context. It is an interesting style that works well with the scientific and science-fiction basis of the book.
