The Donington Park estate belonged to the the Gillies Shields family and like many other English country estates until World War I when it was requisitioned by the British government and used as a prisoner of war camp.
Wheatcroft funded a major renovation program and Donington reopened in 1977 with a round of the European Formula 2 Championship which was won by Bruno Giacomelli.
Finally, in November 1992, Donington was given a date on the Formula 1 calendar as the 1993 European Grand Prix.
