The municipality of Dobje was formed in 1998 by secession from Sentjur pri Celju.
The flag and arms are prescribed by decision Odlok o istovetnostnih simbolih Obcine Dobje, adopted on 19 June 2000, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 64/2000.
Provisions which include the coat of arms and the flag, among other things, are included in the amended municipal statutes Spremembe in dopolnitve statuta Obcine Dobje, adopted on 23 November 2001 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 102/2001.
