Encyclopedia > Die (integrated circuit)

A die in the context of integrated circuits is a small piece of semiconducting material on which a given circuit is fabricated. Typically Integrated Circuits will be produced in large batches on a single wafer of Electronic-grade silicon (EGS) through processes such as lithography. The resulting wafer is cut into many pieces, each containing one copy of the integrated ciruit that is being produced. Each one of these pieces is called a "die". Integrated circuit showing memory blocks, logic and input/output pads around the periphery A monolithic integrated circuit (also known as IC, microchip, silicon chip, computer chip or chip) is a miniaturized electronic circuit (consisting mainly of semiconductor devices, as well as passive components) that has been manufactured in the surface... An etched silicon wafer In microelectronics, a wafer is a thin slice of semiconducting material, such as a silicon crystal, upon which microcircuits are constructed by doping (for example, diffusion or ion implantation), etching, and deposition of various materials. ...
