Introduction of AMD CPUs in Dells

  • Starting in September 2006, Dell released Dimension computers with AMD processors. [1]

Current Dimension Series Information

  • Dimension B110/1100- This is dell’s basic desktop model. It starts with a Intel Celeron processor and no dedicated graphics card.
  • Dimension E521- This is the midrange PC and one of the first AMD Dell Computer in Dell Dimension line, with a AMD Athlon 64 or Sempron processor and uses a nVidia GeForce 6150 LE opposed to Intel GMA and can be upgraded by using PCI-E x16 slot. It can be ordered with Windows Media Center 2005, and offers TV tuners.
  • Dimension E520- Same as the E521 but uses an Intel motherboard and uses Intel Core 2 Duo processors, and starts with an Intel X3000 integrated video card.
  • Dimension C521- Very similar to the E521 but uses a smaller form factor.
  • Dimension 5150- Only in the Dell small business section and uses the same parts as the legacy E510 using a P945 chipset.

The Athlon 64 is an eighth-generation, AMD64 architecture microprocessor produced by AMD, released on September 23, 2003[1]. It is the third processor to bear the name Athlon, and the immediate successor to the Athlon XP[2]. The second processor (after the Opteron) to implement AMD64 architecture and the... Dimension 4700 Fan Problem

Some 4700s were shipped with the case fan installed backwards and blowing air into the PC case rather than sucking it out. A common symptom of this problem is that the PC case is noticeably warm to the touch (either side of the bottom front) after running for while. Examining the case from the rear, with the PC turned off, can confirm the fan's orientation. The back of the case has outlets for two fans. The top one is the power supply fan and the lower, larger one is the case fan. The case fan should have a white sticker on the center spindle, visible through the protective grille. The absence of a visible sticker is an indication of an improperly installed fan. A user on Dell's support forum reported that Dell replaced his entire PC that was overheating in a way that would be caused by the above problem. Though it is a fairly simple task for anyone with experience upgrading or modifying their PC to reorient the case fan, anyone who's unsure of what they are doing should contact Dell Technical Support. An overheating PC is unsafe and should be repaired or replaced.

A moderator (DELL-ChrisM) at the Dell forums has posted the following information:

"All,

Some users have incorrectly suggested that the fans were installed backwards. While this airflow is the opposite of other Dimension models using the same chassis, the reverse airflow is intentional. The Dimension 4700 uses a different motherboard and CPU voltage regulator design than other Dimension systems, one that is very effective and efficient, but requires direct airflow. To achieve this, air is pulled in through the back of the chassis, across the CPU heat sink and voltage regulator, then out the front of the chassis. In short, if the case fan on the rear of the case pulls air inwards, it is installed correctly. The fan should not be reversed! Doing so may increase the risk of damage to the CPU voltage regulator by overheating."
