Decatur is a city located in Morgan County, Alabama on the shore of the Tennessee River. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 53,929. The city is the county seat of Morgan County6. This town is named after war hero Stephen Decatur, Jr.

Decatur is located at 34°34'52" North, 86°59'0" West (34.580992, -86.983392)1.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 155.1 km˛ (59.9 mi˛). 138.3 km˛ (53.4 mi˛) of it is land and 16.8 km˛ (6.5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 10.83% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 53,929 people, 21,824 households, and 14,753 families residing in the city. The population density is 389.9/km˛ (1,009.7/mi˛). There are 23,950 housing units at an average density of 173.1/km˛ (448.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 75.50% White, 19.56% Black or African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 2.22% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 5.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 21,824 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% are married couples living together, 13.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.99.


In the city the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.5 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $37,192, and the median income for a family is $47,574. Males have a median income of $37,108 versus $22,471 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,431. 14.9% of the population and 11.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.2% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


Decatur is served by Huntsville, Alabama's Huntsville International Airport.
