Cox entered the music industry as a backup vocalist for Céline Dion, and after signing to Arista Records, released her self-titled debut album in 1995. The album introduced her to the world and set the stage for 1998's One Wish. The first single from that album, "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here", spent fourteen weeks at #1 on the top R&B 100 charts for the USA, as well as eight consecutive weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her third album, The Morning After, was released in November 2002, but failed to sell as well as her previous efforts, failing to earn an RIAA certification and becoming the lowest-selling album of her career at the time. Cox stopped recording for a while after the failure of the album, and on February 17, 2004, she made her Broadway debut in the Elton John-Tim Rice musical Aida, returning to recording only to release a dance remix of "Easy As Life" as a single.
