It has been named the number one public high school in Houston by the Houston Chronicle and the Houston Press. DeBakey, which serves grades 9 through 12, is a part of the Houston Independent School District, and is located east of the Texas Medical Center, being the only HISD magnet high school for health professions. The school was named after Michael E. DeBakey, a famous heart surgeon. DeBakey is currently being renovated after canceling plans to relocate inside the Texas Medical Center; plans for the school to be relocated within the Texas Medical Center were made, but soon canceled because the Houston Independent School District decided to renovate instead. The school offers more than twenty-five clubs for its diverse population. Notable clubs include BSU (Black Student Union) and VISA (Vietnamese International Student Association) for the school's two largest ethnic populations. Other important clubs include the school's various honor societies, including chapters of the BETA club, the National Honor Society, and the National Spanish Honor Society [4].
