Primarily an orchestral composer, Sosnowski's South Mountain Sketchbook -- a series of symphonic color pieces and tone poems -- is the best known of his works. The pieces are characterized by strongly delineated stylistic treatments and novel use of orchestration and organizational forms.

Recent works for symphony orchestra include Ascension, Ruminations On Providence, and The Departure Of Rosa Parks (dedicated in memory of civil rights activist Rosa Parks). Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an African American civil rights activist and seamstress whom the U.S. Congress dubbed the mother of the modern-day Civil Rights Movement.
