Cumbria Constabulary is the Home Office police force in England covering the county of Cumbria. It is currently the fifth largest force in terms of geographic area but one of the smallest in terms of officer numbers. The county is the second largest in England by area with a population of just under 500,000, making it sparsely populated across much of the county. Major urban area include Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness. These conditions set specific challenges for the force. A force by the name was formed in 1967 by the merger of the Cumberland and Westmorland Constabulary (itself a result of an amalgamation) with the Carlisle city police. Now part of the county of Cumbria, Kendal is an important town in a largely rural area.
