CumanĂ¡, Venezuela was the first settlement to be established on the South American continent by Europeans. It was founded in 1521 by Gonzalo de Ocampo. CumanĂ¡ is situated at the mouth of the Manzanares river on the Caribbean coast in the NE of Venezuela. It is the capital of Sucre state and home to one of 5 sites for the Universidad del Oriente. It is a busy maritime city with the largest tuna fleet in Venezuela but is also rumoured to be a narcotics trafficking port.


In spite of some of its less salubrious associations it is a fantastic place to visit, not least for the nearby Mochima national park which boasts some of Venezuela's finest beaches.
