Crawford County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri, and determined by the U.S. Census Bureau to include the mean center of U.S. population in 1990. As of 2000, the population was 22,804. Its county seat is Steelville. The county was organized in 1829 and is named after Georgia U.S. Senator William H. Crawford. The current county comissioner is Edwin Worley, first elected in 2002 and completing his first term in January 2007. William H. Crawford - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (550 words)
Crawford was born in Amherst County, Virginia, but his family moved south to Appling County, Georgia when he was a boy.
Crawford soon became a respected and influential senator, and was elected president pro tempore in 1811.
Crawford was again a leading candidate for the Democratic-Republican presidential nomination in 1824, but a massive stroke in 1823 ended his chances.
